Towards zero CO2 emissions in the production of methanol from switchgrass. CO2 to methanol
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this work an integrated facility is proposed that produces methanol from switchgrass and uses the captured CO2 to enhance the production capacity by 50% via CO2 hydrogenation. The process consists of two sections, biomass processing to syngas and its conversion to methanol, and the electrolytic section where hydrogen is produced to hydrogenate the CO2 that has been captured during syngas cleaning. The integrated facility produces up to 207 Mgal/yr of methanol production and 318 kt/yr of oxygen, but requires a large amount of electricity to generate the hydrogen. As a result, it can only be used in regions where wind velocity is above 8 m/s and solar radiation is above 5 kWh/m2 /day such as in the Midwest of US, certain regions in China or the South of Europe. The investment is high, around 1000 M€, but the production cost of methanol is promising 0.25-0.35 €/kg with a high production capacity.

Simulation of methanol synthesis by hydrogenation of carbon dioxide recovered from combustion gases of Fluid Catalytic Cracking Unit of Abadan Refinery
Refineries produce about four percent of the global carbon dioxide emissions, close to one billion tons per year. Globally, the refining sector is the third largest producer of carbon dioxide after the electricity generation and cement industry. This greenhouse gases is a major cause of global warming and climate change and is a serious threat to human health and the environment. One way to redu...
متن کاملShort Review: Mitigation of Current Environmental Concerns from Methanol Synthesis
Methanol has become a widely used and globally distributed product. Methanol is very important due to the current depletion of fossil fuels. Industrially, methanol was produced from the catalytic reaction of synthetic gas composed of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide. Methanol production has brought great attention due to the carbon dioxide as the main source of greenhouse gas emiss...

Bond-Order Conservation-Morse Potential (BOC-MP) method is used to carry out the calculationon the CO2+ H20 system. One of the best catalysts for methanol synthesis in catalytic reductionof CO2 with H2O is Cu/ZnO/A1203 whose surface is supported by with some amount of Pd orGa. Reduction of CO2 with H20 on Cu will result in methanol formation; while on Ni will lead tomethane formation. In the me...
متن کاملEnvironmental effects of using Methanol as a biofuel into the combustion chamber of a heavy-duty diesel engine
Methanol as a biofuel is an environmentally friendly substitute for pure diesel and can be obtained from biomasses. The use of biofuels such as methanol for the combustion process is associated with positive impacts on the environment. Using pure methanol or a blend of diesel/methanol fuel in motorized vehicles has been proposed by researchers. In this paper, pure methanol was injected into the...
متن کاملDiscovery of a Ni-Ga catalyst for carbon dioxide reduction to methanol.
The use of methanol as a fuel and chemical feedstock could become very important in the development of a more sustainable society if methanol could be efficiently obtained from the direct reduction of CO2 using solar-generated hydrogen. If hydrogen production is to be decentralized, small-scale CO2 reduction devices are required that operate at low pressures. Here, we report the discovery of a ...
